Modern distributed systems. Meeting at the University of Lucerne (HSLU)
In November 24, Konrad Baechler, co-founder of the diva.exchange association, presented a series of lectures on modern distributed systems. The main focus of the research conducted by diva.exchange in cooperation with academic institutions is to deepen knowledge about the nature and capabilities of distributed systems.
Distributed systems consist of nodes that are connected by a network and exchange messages. The main characteristics of such systems are parallel operation of nodes, no single time standard, autonomy in error handling, and the ability to dynamically change the composition of participants. Examples include communication systems (e.g., email), blockchain technologies, Fediverse platforms (like Mastodon), and distributed data stores such as IPFS. These systems are becoming the foundation for today’s technologies, including the Internet of Things and mobile devices.
We will present several video presentations. The first one focuses on the resilience and security of distributed systems.
Projects such as the Swiss-Made “drand” for random number generation illustrate the importance of robust solutions. The importance of autonomy, allowing systems to self-regulate, was highlighted as a key factor in their success. Distributed systems are an integral part of the technology ecosystem, supporting communication, data storage and economic processes, making them the backbone of the digital future.
